Why me?

Low self esteem usually develops during childhood and can depend on the experiences you have. The things that people say to you when you are growing up can affect how you view yourself. If you experience being

  • Constantly criticised
  • Bullied
  • Neglected
  • Made to feel different to others
  • Made to feel unworthy or unlovable

Or you may have gone through some difficult and stressful life events such as

  • Serious illness
  • Losing someone close to you

Some experiences you have as an adult can also lead to low self-esteem

  • Financial troubles
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Physical, emotional or sexual abuse
  • Harsh criticism by others
  • Chronic pain or health problems
